Iran’s Vice President for International Affairs Ali Saeedlou has expressed the country’s readiness to participate in the reconstruction of Iraq.

“Given its great capabilities in various areas, the Islamic Republic of Iran can stand by the Iraqi officials in the country’s reconstruction and progress,” Saeedlou said in a meeting with Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Rosh Nori Shawis in Arbil on Monday.

Saeedlou also called for the further expansion of economic and political ties between the Islamic Republic and Iraq.

The Iranian minister referred to the high capacity of both countries for commerce and called for an increase in the existing trade balance between the two neighbors.

Nori Shawis, for his part, also called for the enhancement of economic and commercial ties between Tehran and Baghdad.

Saeedlou arrived in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Monday and later travelled to Arbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region, to hold talks with top Kurdish officials.

During his visit, Saeedlou will participate in the first meeting of the Tehran-Arbil economic cooperation, scheduled for Tuesday.

On Monday, Saeedlou held a meeting with the Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi in Baghdad, where the Iranian official said cultural and historical commonalties between the Iranian and Iraqi nations provide good grounds for the all-out expansion of relations.
