Read a full match report of the FA Cup quarter-final replay between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Monday, 1 April, 2013.
Chelsea
deservedly progressed to an FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City at
Wembley thanks to a magnificent goal from Demba Ba and an even more
magnificent save from Petr Cech. Chelsea love this competition.
The holders were well worth their win for their fluid, forceful display in the
second half. Eden Hazard was again exceptional, linking moves well. Juan
Mata and Oscar were similarly influential. Ba took his goal expertly,
hooking home Mata’s pass, while Cech’s save from Javier Hernandez’s header
even drew praise from a Manchester
United goalkeeping legend, Peter Schmeichel, who tweeted “what a
save”.
As their Double dream ended, United paid the price for not finishing Chelsea
off when leading the original tie by two goals at Old Trafford, a point made
joyously by the Matthew Harding Upper and Lower at the final whistle. United
looked tired at times, lacking real service from out wide, although Robin
van Persie came off the bench and wasted two fine opportunities.
